Question Tag
To make a statement and ask for confirmation of it is a common practice in conversation in English language.
Ex: It is very hot today, isn’t it?
This bold part in the above sentence followed by a Question mark is known as question tag.
Usage of Question Tag in English Grammer
There are two pattern of putting question tag
Auxiliary+ n’t +subject - If the statement made is positive
Examples:-
- It is raining, isn’t it?
- You are angry, aren’t you?
- Gayatri broke the wall, didn’t she?
Auxiliary + subject - If the statement made in negative
Examples:-
- You are not ready, are you?
- She cannot play, can she?
- Nitin does not work hard, does he?
Important: - The subject of a question tag is always a pronoun, it can never be a noun as illustrated by the following given some examples:-
- I am fine, aren’t I?
- Let us go to the lake, Shall we?
- Wait for some time, can you?
- There is a garden in that sector, isn’t there?
