List of National Parks in India

  1.  A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes.
  2. A nation park if often discribes as an area with enough ecological, geo-morphological and natural significance with rich fauna and flora, which is designed to protect and to develop wildlife or its environment.
  3. According to Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, a National Park should be an area with enough ecological, geo-morphological and natural significance, with rich fauna and flora.
  4. Central Government enjoys the freedom to declare any specific area in the country a National Park, but often based on the recommendations made the state governments.
  5. A National Park is declared to protect, to propagate and to to develop wildlife or its environment.
  6. The major difference between a National Park and other protected areas like Biosphere reserves is that the rights of the people living inside the limits of a national Park are often tightly regulated.
  7. Grazing by livestock inside a national park is strictly prohibited and any removal of forest produce needs recommendation from National Board of Wildlife.
  8. India's first national park was established in 1936 as Hailey National Park, now known as Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand.
  9. By 1970, India only had five national parks. In 1972, India enacted the Wildlife Protection Act and Project Tiger to safeguard the habitats of conservation reliant species.
  10. Further federal legislation strengthening protections for wildlife was introduced in the 1980s.
  11.  As of July 2015, there were 103 national parks encompassing an area of 40,500 km2 (15,600 sq mi) , comprising 1.23% of India's total surface area.
