- The Expenditure Secretary T V Somanathan was recently designated as the Finance Secretary by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. About T V Somanathan Currently he is the senior most officer among all the secretaries in the Ministry of Finance. He is a 1987 batch Indian Administrative Service Officer of Tamil Nadu cadre.
- The Chinese born film maker Chloe Zhao has become the first Asian woman to win the Best director at the Academy Awards. She won the award for her film Nomadland. About Chloe Zhao Zhao was born in China and went to a boarding school in London.
- Israel and Greece have signed their biggest ever defence procurement deal. The agreement amounted to 1.65 billion USD. It will strengthen economic and political ties between the countries.
- The Indian Wrestler Vinesh Phogat has won her maiden Gold at the Asian Wrestling Championship. She won the medal beating Taipei’s Meng Hsuan Hsieh.
- Remdesivir is an injectable anti-virus. It is injected to prevent replication of the virus. The Remdesivir was created in 2014. It was manufactured in large scale to treat Ebola.
- The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) tied up with the Gamapp Sportswizz Tech Private Limited to launch “LITTLE GURU” application. It is a specialized mobile application for learning Sanskrit. About “Little Guru” Little Guru is a gamified application. It teaches Sanskrit in an interactive platform.
- Noura al Matroushi has been named as the first Female Astronaut of UAE. First Female Astronaut of UAE Noura al-Matroushi was selected as the first female astronaut of UAE from four thousand other applicants.
- The US Navy recently conducted Freedom of Navigation Operation in the Indian Ocean Region near Lakshadweep. During the operation, the US warship entered the Exclusive Economic Zone of India without seeking prior consent from India.
- The scientists from Singapore have developed a technology to interact with plants. The technology has been named as “Robo Plant”. About the Robo Plant Technology The technology helps to control the plants using smart phone applications.
- The Union Cabinet recently apprised a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed between India and Japan. The MoU was signed between National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL) that operates under Department of Space, GoI and the Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere called the RISH that operates under Kyoto University of Japan.
- India recently hosted the BRICS Finance Ministers Meet. This was the first BRICS meet under the chairmanship of India in 2021.
- Every year the National Maritime Day is celebrated on April 5 in India. The first National Maritime Day was celebrated in 1964.
- Hubert Hurkacz of Poland has won the Miami Open title. He won the title playing against Jannik Sinner. Hubert has become the Poland’s first Masters 1000 Champion.
- On April 4, 2021, the multinational military exercise “Shantir Ogroshena, 2021” was begun at Bangabandhu Senanibas, Bangladesh. The exercise is being held to commemorate the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He is the Father of Bangladesh.
- The biggest floating solar power plant of India is to be set up at Ramagundam in Telangana. About Ramagundam Solar Power Plant The capacity of the solar power plant is 100 MW. It is expected to be opened in May 2021.
- The Odisha state government has proposed a second biosphere reserve in the southern part of the state at Mahendragiri. It is a mountain in the Gajapati district of the state.
India ranks 49th in Inclusive Internet Index 2021 by Facebook-EIU
- The Economist Intelligence Unit(EIU), in partnership with Facebook, has released the Inclusive Internet Index 2021, which measure the extent to which internet is available and affordable by region, and highlights additional insight into how people around the world are using the web.
- India has been ranked at 49th spot globally. It shares its rank with Thailand.
- The ‘Inclusive Internet Index’ surveyed 120 countries, representing 98 percent of global GDP and 96 percent of global population.
- The overall Index score is based on four parameters, which are: Availability, Affordability, Relevance and Readiness categories.

- In South Asia, only Pakistan and Afghanistan ranked below India.
- Among India’s neighbours, Bangladesh ranked 65, Nepal 106, Pakistan 153, Afghanistan 156, Bhutan 130 and Sri Lanka 116.
- Among regions, South Asia is the second-lowest performer on the index, with 62.3% of its overall gender gap closed.

- India captain Virat Kohli Wisden Almanack’s ODI player of the 2010s.
- Sachin Tendulkar is the ODI Cricketer of the 1990s.
- Kapil Dev was named as the ODI Cricketer for the 1980s.
- England all-rounder Ben Stokes is ‘Leading Cricketer of the Year’.
- Australia’s Beth Mooney is ‘Leading Women’s Cricketer in the World’.
- West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard was adjudged the ‘Leading T20 Cricketer in the World’.
- Meanwhile, Jason Holder, Mohammed Rizwan, Dom Sibley, Zak Crawley, and Darren Stevens have been awarded the Wisden Cricketers of the Year 2021.
World Press Freedom Index 2021
This freedom index is published annually since 2002 by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). The World Press Freedom Index is an important advocacy tool based on the principle of emulation between states.
In 180 countries, the degree of freedom available to journalists is determined by pooling the responses of experts to a questionnaire that is devised by the RSF. This qualitative analysis is combined with quantitative data on abuses and acts of violence against journalists during the period evaluated.
