Holi background
Hiranyakashipu was a king in ancient India who was like a demon. He wanted to avenge the death of his younger brother, who was killed by Lord Vishnu. So the king prayed for years to get power. In the end, he was given a boon. But at the same time Hiranyakashyap started believing himself to be God and asked his people to worship him like a god. The cruel king had a young son named Prahlada, who was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Prahlada never obeyed his father's order and continued to worship Lord Vishnu. The king was so harsh that he decided to kill his own son, because he refused to worship him. He asked his sister Ask Holika, who was immune to the fire, to sit on a pyre of fire with Prahlada in his lap. His plan was to burn Prahlada. But his plan did not run as Prahlada who was reciting Lord Vishnu's name was safe, but Holika burnt to ashes. Holika's defeat indicates that all is bad. Subsequently, Lord Vishnu killed Hiranyakashipu. But it is actually Holika's death that is associated with Holi. Because of this, in some states of India, such as Bihar, a pyre is lit as a bonfire to commemorate the death of evil before the day of Holi.

Lord Krishna Holi
But how did colors become part of Holi? This is for the period of Lord Krishna (rebirth of Lord Vishnu). It is believed that Lord Krishna celebrated Holi with colors and that is why he made it popular. He used to play Holi with his friends in Vrindavan and Gokul. They played pranks throughout the village and thus became a community event. This is the reason that till date Holi celebrations in Vrindavan are unmatched.

STORY OF KAMA AND RATTI
Holi has much significance with Lord Shiva in Hinduism. Lord Shi was always involved in yoga and deep meditation. That is why Lord Shiva took the help of Kamadeva to bring Parvati Shiva back to the world. Kamadeva tried to break Shiva’s meditation, but Kamadeva was burnt down to open Shiva’s third eye. Kamdev’s wife Rati and Parvati were upset at the incident. Then Kamdev’s wife Rati did penance of Shiva for 40 days. Later Lord Shiva realized that he should return to the family. Then the penance of Bhagavan-Shiva was satisfied that he brought Kamdev back. From that time, the Holi festival is celebrated from the fortieth day of the spring fifth.
Holi is a spring festival that says goodbye to winter. In some parts, the celebration is also associated with the spring harvest. Farmers consider Holi as part of their happiness seeing their stock full of new crops. Because of this, Holi is also known as 'Spring Festival' and 'Kama Mahotsava'.

Holi is an ancient Hindu festival
Holi is one of the oldest Hindu festivals and it probably began several centuries before the birth of Jesus. Based on this, Holi is mentioned in ancient religious books such as Jaimini's Purvamimamsa-Sutra and Kathak-Gram-Sutra.

Even the temples of ancient India have idols of Holi on the walls. One of them is a 16th century temple in Hampi, the capital of Vijayanagar. The temple has several scenes of Holi on its walls depicting princes and princesses and their maids along with masons who scorch for water in the palace.

The 16th century Ahmednagar painting, Mewar painting (circa 1755), several medieval paintings in Bundi, reflect Holi celebrations in one way or another.

Holi colors
Previously, the colors of Holi were made from the flowers of 'Tesu' or 'Palash' and were known as Gulal. The colors were very good for the skin as no chemicals were used to make them. But among all definitions of festivals, the definition of colors has changed over time. Today people have started using harsh colors made from chemicals. Bright colors are also used to play Holi, which are bad and that is why many people avoid celebrating this festival. We should enjoy this old festival of Holi with a true sense of celebration.
Also, Holi is not a one-day festival as observed in most states of India, but it is celebrated for three days.

Day 1 - On the full moon day (Holi Purnima), colorful powder and water are arranged in small brass pots on the plate. The celebration begins with the eldest male member spraying the color on his family members.
Day 2- It is also known as 'Puno'. On this day the idols of Holika are burnt and people burn bonfire to remember the story of Holika and Prahlada. Mothers along with their children take five rounds of bonfire in a clockwise direction to seek the blessings of the god of fire.

Day 3- This day is known as 'Parva' and is the last and last day of Holi celebrations. On this day colored powder and water are poured over each other. Deveshof Radha and Krishna are painted with colors.
