Deepa Malik: first Indian woman to win a medal in Paralympic Games
Deepa Malik on created history by becoming the country’s first-ever woman athlete to win a medal at the Rio Paralympics games 2016, when she bagged a silver in the shotput F-53 event here. Deepa Malik was born on 30 September 1970. She is an Indian athlete.
Deepa is a paralysed from waist down. Life twists when a spinal tumour made walking impossible for her 17 years ago. The spinal tumour had to be operated and 31 surgeries were conducted on Deepa which was healed after 183 stitches between her waist and legs. She has won 58 national & 18 International medals across all disciplines to date.

Deepa Malik recorded her name in the Limca Book of Records 4 times.
- She completed the longest drive in India (3,278 kms from Chennai to Delhi) in 2013.
- In 2011, she became the first paraplegic woman to drive to Khardunga La pass, the highest motorable pass in the world.
- She rode a special bike for 58 kms in 2009.
- In 2008, she crossed a 1 km stretch of the Yamuna river against the current.
Apart from sports, Deepa Malik is also a motivational speaker. Journey so far was never easy for Deepa Malik, but the fighting spirit in her lead her to this stage, lead her to bring laurels to the country and make everyone proud.
